KEARNEY — Wisconsin Blizzard Kellet saw Nebraska Select 17 reel off eight straight points.

But the Wisconsinites had the answer.

“Our point guard, Adam Pohlman, had a couple steals, and we got a couple layups. Then Ethan Guske got hot from downtown,” coach Chris Kellet said.

Guske finished with 24 points, 20 in the second half, as Wisconsin Blizzard Kellet won the Mr. Basketball Invitational championship 60-55 Sunday.

Nebraska Select 17 built five-point leads on a couple of occasions, the last being 49-44 with 4½ minutes to play.

But that’s when Guske got hot and finished off the victory.

The win was the second of the summer for the Wisconsin team, which also won the Mr. Basketball event in Mankato, Minn., and finished second in Sioux Falls, S.D.

“This feels great. But I wish we would have gotten the one in Sioux Falls. That’s the one I wanted the most,” said Kellet, who played in the Kearney tournament in 2000 and 2001. “I’ve been going to Sioux Falls for six years as a coach, and it’s got the biggest trophy.”

Six-9 post player Josiah VerVelde chipped in 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Blizzard.

Connor Ketter of Norfolk Catholic led Nebraska Select 17 with 18 points, while Chandler Folkerts of Milford, added 10. Folkerts scored eight of his points in the first half, and he led the team in rebounds with eight.
